Opioid Epidemic and how Chiropractic can help

Recognition of Chiropractic

Everyone can agree that the America’s opioid addiction is out of control and it’s taken far too long for doctors, scientists and the government to get a handle on it.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), one in four patients who take prescription opioids long term, struggle with addiction.  A high percentage of this population struggles with musculoskeletal problems.  Since 1999, deaths involving opioids have quadrupled.

The majority of these patients will feel that the conditions are less severe because the drugs numb the pain or act like a band aid.  This can lead to overuse of the problem area, which can result in the delay of the healing process or worse, cause permanent damage.

Chiropractic and other non-drug approaches for pain management can be the first in line to defend against pain and addiction caused by over usage of prescription opioids.   Out of all the doctors in the world, the ones that specialize in the musculoskeletal issues are chiropractors.   They are able to identify your issue and find a solution.

Respected heath care organizations recognize the benefits of chiropractic therapies because of the growing research. This year, the ACP (American College of Physicians) updated it’s guidelines for treatment of acute and chronic low back pain.  They recommend non-drug treatments before resorting to drug therapies.

Controlled studies and trials, chiropractic therapies, acupunture, massage and Physical Therapy have shown to be successful according to the Annals of Internal Medicine.   When these therapies showed little or no relief, the guidelines state to use muscle relaxants and ibuprofen.   Prescription opioids should be a last resort.

In 2015, the Joint Commission, an organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the United States and includes every major hospital, recognized the value of non-drug approaches by adding chiropractic and acupuncture to it’s pain management standard.
